COLONOSCOPY

A Colonoscopy is a routine test to examine the lining of your bowel, also called the large intestine or colon. This is done using an endoscope, which is a flexible tube, about the thickness of little finger, which has a camera and light at one end. It is passed through the anus( back passage) and carefully moved around the large bowel by a specially trained doctor. Colonoscopy is recommended to patients with the following symptoms for more than 3 weeks:

  1. Blood in Stools
  2. Any change in bowel habit
  3. Unexplained lump in the abdomen (tummy)
  4. Stools that are looser than normal
  5. Unexplained weight loss or tiredness
  6. Bloated, swelling or pain in abdomen (tummy) Screening colonoscopy is offered to patients of age above 50 years and used to detect the early signs of colon cancer.
